Congratulations President Trump, the 45th President of the United States of America!
Who would have thought that seven hours earlier that we will be muttering those words? We all sat down: to tweet, to watch and be jubilant about how Hilary Clinton will be the first female president of the United States of America. But America has proven us wrong, the so called, world’s greatest country has made alternative history by appointing Trump. He will be the firsts of many: the first president to have no previous political experience, the first nominee to have risen about numerous controversies of sexual and racist misconduct and list is yet to continue. President-elect Trump, you have left the world flabbergasted!
To the rest of us, living outside of USA, this sounds like the most bizarre qualification. In fact, I had complete faith in the US electorate, faith that they will not elect a president who is
an unstable bigot, sexual predator and compulsive liar
and will lead the world to a political unknown. But to Trump supporters, he said what they wanted to hear. His honest approach, straightforward insults, offensive but closet opinions resonated with the people who were anti-establishment. He was mocked by the media, people’s interest in him thus multiplied, and the more the people talked, the more his support grew. He was equipped with a radical set of opinions, opinions that pockets of American population had but by the end of the eighteen months, more people started to believe in the message that he was conveying.
Once the business tycoon is now the president of the United States: handling the world’s only contemporary superpower, decision maker of the world’s largest GDP nominal, being the face of international affairs and being commander in chief of the world’s most expensive military (with the largest nuclear arsenal) – all things that he knows next to nothing about. The job comes with supreme, unrestrained power (especially since Republicans have managed to secure the House of Representatives and much of the Senate).
This vote and the Brexit vote by global monopoly players show a drastic change in attitudes of the people. Gone are the days of voting based on class, age and gender. The electorate wants to distance themselves from the rest of the world, in fact we are not much different from our ancestors in this ultimate race for survival.
Now, as before, every man is for himself.
